Collected ideas from the Audience in the Area of Reading:
(Here are the table ideas about reading that have been collected and slightly edited by Dave Loertscher. Feel free to edit and add your own here. If you add, use a different color and add your name to the idea)
- In my school my students have created a book review database with over 3,000 student entries. This is not connected to any assignment.
- Blogs by librarians for students to comment about books the librarian posts. Again these are not connected to assignments. Students comment over the summer on weekends and any time. This is a very low socioeconomic school.
- book reviews and book talks on a podcast posted to the school page
- direct contact with an author with wiki and video conferencing
- Playaways and MP3s for audiobooks
- A book club is a natural for a wiki. A wiki takes booktalks to a different level. Kids can set it up themselves, or they can be moderated as well.
- eBooks should be made more available. Audio books too.
- Thematic reading lists on web page
- news feeds on webpage. ed note: reading the news is reading
- book clubs with blogs
- genre wiki - student enter favorite books by genre
- reading discussion on blog
- VoiceThread.com- put up pictures and book reviews or original stories
- podcasts - read alouds, book talks etc
- Increase readng circulation in increments. Think in terms of 10 times the first year and 5 times the next and doubling there after until you circulate a million books in one year. ed note: One time I was doing a workshop for librarians and principals. I talked about unlimited circulation. One librarian sayd: If I did that, I would not have any books on my shelves. Her principaljumped to his feet and said: "I pray for that problem."
- Graphic organizers help overcome differences in reading ability to permit higher level thinking and learning. ed note: the same thing is true with ELL kids.
- Read a book - Podcast a book review. (Audacity and Garage Band are free)
- Circulating audio books on MP3 players.
- Kris uses blogs to have students enter book reviews online. She offered incentives at first but it has now taken off. Students are talking about books and reviewing books that are shared with each other.
- Playaways from Follett. Students can listen to books while reading.
- "Read" pages as wallpaper on library computers.
- Virtual Book Club on Moodle--talked online, but at the end the students wanted to meet face to face
- Literature circles
- It would be really neat to do RSS feeds of things like new books or activities at the library.. .we don't know how to do it yet! ed. note: It will take you ten mintes to learn if you are a slow learner. Just get a geek to show you how.
- Digital story creating illustrate the story you have just read
- write your own ending to a story; write a beginning; post these on a wiki, student blogg , or web page
- digital libraries. ed note: it is going that way fast.
- Scan a book, project it, and then read it aloud to the class and everyone can see the pictures and help you read the text.
- eboard link for student book reviews (with responses)
- students make a trailer for a movie about their book. ed note or, the movie they watedhed or the speech they heard or...
